"Free" as in "Taxes"
OrangePolitics: Sign the Free Public WiFi Petition

Carborro has "free" municipal wifi (with a pretty limited range), and some people just out of range in Chapel Hill want in on the action. I'm not in favor; I'd rather have my taxes go towards road improvement, for instance.

I'm sure the idea is to attract hip, young, upwardly mobile folks with disposable income who will trickle the revenue down necessary for the road improvement you so desire. Or, you know, they could just use the money to fix the roads.

Chapel Hill is a college town, and the college kids have no money, but the college professors do, in big gobs, as due all the Research Triangle Park employees who move to Chapel Hill (instead of Durham) to get in on the better public schools in this school district.

Combine this with the fact that several prime downtown lots are essentially locked up, and I don't think that "free wifi" is the best first step towards getting more yuppies.
