Coding Horror: Pimp My IDE

(Article via LarkWare, my .NET programming linklog of choice. For instance, I got to ReSharper through LarkWare.)

In college I started coding on a non-white background. Some time between then and now I forgot about this. Reading this article reminded me, and I immediately changed my work Visual Studio background color to off-white and it was like a great weight had been lifted. Seriously. Those few RGB ticks make all the difference.

I also stole the white-on-grey line numbers and black-on-green selection colors.

DEATH TO WHITE-ON-DARK-BLUE SELECTION COLORS!

(Oh, an on this thread about web background colors, I'd like to change my vote from "white" to "just slightly off white".)

Oh I quite agree. In fact, if you believe it, that was my favorite addition to VS7 - the ability to pick arbitrary colors. (VS6 was limited to the old Windows 16 color palette for some reason) I've been coding on a sort of vellum colored background for years now. Combine that with a nice smoothed font, it hardly seems like programming at all!

Oh I believe it. Any and all craptitude in Visual Studio pre-7 (and even in 7, up to 2005) can be blamed on the compiler team all using the command-line compilers and external editors instead of VS itself.

(Craptitude blame in VS 2005 can be shared with the Office UI team.)

And thus, dogfooding is again seen to be a good idea.

wow you're not kidding about the off-white. I can feel my eyes not straining as much...

gotta remember that one for my new web design...

and maybe I'll try those fonts out as well.
